Initially, the development of the now defunct Black Island studios under the project codename Van Buren, Fallout 3 was originally going to take a totally different route. But in 2003, Black Isle Studios went under, and in 2004 the rights for Fallout 3 were sold to Bethesda Softworks. Instead of using the Van Buren code, Bethesda opted to start from scratch. And so was born the Fallout 3 we know and love today.
Fallout 3 development process of four years was well worth it as it is a post-apocalyptic RPG with Bethesda styles everywhere.
